Yesterday I was looking at something on my computer and wanted to show Jordan, so I called her over. This is the exchange of words that took place:
Me: Jordan, come look at this.
Jordan: Please?
Me: Jordan, please come look at this.
Jordan: Please?
Me: Jordan, please come look at this.
I was shocked at that moment to realize that I tend to be kind of bossy. I don't do it to be mean. In fact, very rarely do I even realize that I am not putting a question mark at the end of a request. Usually I'll just say, "Luis, can you come [insert command]... thank you." As I thought about this, I was remembered being a teenager and having my dad "ask" me to do something. I used to get so mad at him telling me to do things instead of asking me. I have come to realize that Barney was right, "please" and "thank you" really are magic words. It is amazing how one little word can have such a great impact on the way we feel about what we are being asked to do. All it takes is a "please."
