If you are part of the Student Bar Association or Academic Success Program at BYU, you know that when new student orientation rolls around you are going to have to help out as a student mentor. During my first year of law school, the mentors wore visors so that everyone knew who they were. From my understanding, the mentors complained because they didn't like the visors. Last year (my first year as a mentor) we wore baby blue shirts. They weren't cute so once again there were complaints. This year the shirt color was yellow. While the shirts are not the most attractive things that have ever graced wardrobes, most of us understand their purpose and are willing to put up with wearing them for a few hours on the first day of orientation. However, this sentiment was not felt by all. There were a few people who decided that because they had already voiced their disdain towards the t-shirts, they should not have to wear them. So they didn't. Now I ask, why is it so difficult to put on a t-shirt for a few hours? A mentor's purpose on the first day of orientation is merely to be seen and be of help. Without the shirts, 1L's don't know who you are. They can't pick you out of a crowd. And whether or not you are "more dressed up" than most, there are still plenty of people who look just like you. This day was not about you. Why put up such a fight? Why not just swallow your pride, suck up the fact that administration did not do what you wanted them to do and put on the t-shirt? We have 8 months of school ahead of us. Trust me, that is plenty of time to show off the wardrobe acquired over the summer.
