monday morning breakfast

Over this past summer Luis and some of his friends have had a little tradition of going to Denny's at 12 am almost every Monday morning. Due to my work schedule I had never participated in these outings. However, last night Luis asked me if I would be willing to go this time (he wanted to go but wouldn't leave me home sleeping by myself). So we decided to go. We arrived at Denny's at midnight and no one else was there. After about 15 minutes of waiting, everyone else started showing up.

After being seated, our waitress came by to ask us what we wanted to drink. From the confused expression on her face as we ordered, I could tell that this was not going to be the most pleasant experience I've had dining. Instead of bringing us regular tall water glasses, she brought us small orange juice glasses. So we asked her to bring us the larger glasses (which she did). When I sat down and looked at the menu, I knew exactly what I wanted: scrambled eggs, sausage and a caramel apple crisp. When she finally returned to get our orders (about 10 minutes later), she came to me first and I ordered the apple crisp (one of my favorite desserts). They were out. So I had to have her come back to me. So then Luis tried to order something and that were out of whatever he wanted too. At this point I began getting frustrated. She took the orders of a few more people and then I had her come back to me and I ordered a club sandwich and apple pie a la mode (fortunately they weren't out of that).

About 20 minutes later she came back with my apple pie... it was cold. The apples were kind of mushy (which was annoying) but after a few bites I got used to it and finished the pie. After a few more minutes of waiting we all began wondering if they somehow thought that we had already received our food (by this time our waitress had come to tell us that her shift was over and she was leaving). Our food finally came out a few minutes later. Apparently the toast at Denny's is in the running to become America's Best Sandpaper because my club sandwich was really rough and ended up hurting both the roof and bottom of my mouth. The seasoned fries were ok. And I was very happy when everyone finished their food and we were able to come home and go to bed.

While I had a lot of fun with the people at this particular outing, I don't understand why Denny's. From what I gathered last night, the food there is always the same. So why pay for sub-par food week after week? Why not get better food? Or better yet, why not just make food at home? It would save a lot of money and would be 10 times better.
