As I was searching for something to watch online last night while I was still at school, I came across an oldie but goodie... BUG JUICE! I remember watching that show way back in 1997/98 (I think that was when it was) and thinking it was da bomb (which I now realize it really wasn't at all, but that didn't stop me from watching 7 episodes last night). And let me just tell you, I am amazed how much life has changed in these last 10 years. I remember thinking that Stephanie's sunflower dress (that she wore to the 1st Waziyatah dance) was soooo cute. I am now embarrassed to say that my mom bought one of those dresses for which I wore almost every Sunday to church. Other than the obvious differences in fashion, there are a couple of other things noticeably missing from their environment, things I now feel like I could never live without: cell phones and laptops. No texting, no picture messages, no emails, no facebook. It is interesting to hear the kids talk about how they look forward to being able to go back to camp every year so that they can see their friends. These days, kids are easily able to stay in touch with anyone because they ALL have cell phones, email, and myspace/facebook accounts, etc.
10 years ago, it was a big deal to be "going out" with a boy (even though you didn't actually go anywhere together) and an ever bigger deal if you held hands in front of your friends. These days it is normal to see images on TV shows where teenagers are are drinking and having sex. On the show, when Jenny liked the same boy that Keisha liked, Keisha responded by making up a rumor that she was dating said boy to hurt Jenny's feelings. On American Teen (a 2008 documentary Luis and I watched a few weeks ago) when a girl had sex with Megan's best friend, Megan responded by forwarding an email with a picture of the girl's boobs to everyone in school.
