facebook friends

I don't know how many of you have succumbed to the pressure that is Facebook. I created my Facebook account last year as a desperate attempt to add one more distraction to my life. Since then I have accumulated 407 Facebook friends. These are people whom I have known throughout different stages of my life (elementary school, junior high, high school, college, mission, law school, random jobs, random acquaintances whom I don't really know all that well, etc.). The way the system works is that if you see someone that you know, you "ask" them to be your friend. That person can either accept or decline your request. With the few exceptions (of people I am actually friends with and intend to remain friends with for some time), I do not generally add people as my friend. Usually I just wait until someone asks me to be their friend and I accept. Very rarely do I decline a request (which is why I'm up to 407).

I can honestly say that I know/remember about 375 of these people. The few that I don't actually know are people that I have met at random events or people who served in the same mission as I did but whom I don't actually remember (I'm sorry but when you're surrounded by a hundred 19-21 year-old white males from Utah, it is hard to remember every face). The question then becomes, at what point can you send someone a message that says, "Was that really necessary?" How often do I need to see status updates that say, "Steve is... not excited that its monday." Well I've got news for you, Steve, NONE OF US ARE EXCITED WHEN MONDAY ROLLS AROUND!!! Is that really worth a status update? Are you happy now that you have wasted 0.2 seconds of MY LIFE reading YOUR status update on MY homepage? Maybe I should just delete you as a friend, but the fact of the matter is that I like being able to brag about the hundreds and hundreds of "friends" that I have (regardless of whether or not we have spoken in the last 15 years). I may not have been the most popular girl in high school, but it is my goal to become the most popular girl on Facebook!!! ... j/k
